September 2023: Phyllis Khuyag
AYLA @ Whitney
With this month’s theme being identity, we asked Phyllis: What are the most important parts of your identity to you and how do you express them?
“The most important parts of my identity are being asian/mongolian american and my queerness. I still have trouble expressing my asian american identity if I had to be honest, due to a large disconnect with my culture, but being amongst people within the AAPI community and sharing my experiences of being an asian american with others is a huge way that I express that. In terms of my queerness, I’ve freely been myself out in public and I am usually very open to discussing what it’s like being nonbinary and queer! I share my experiences with fellow lgbtq+ community members both organizationally and personally. I hope as I get older, that i’m able to find more connections to my communities through my identities!”
Featured Person of the Month
May 2021: Jeremy Lin
Jeremy Lin is an Taiwanese American basketball player for the Santa Cruz Warriors. Lin was the first American of Chinese or Taiwanese descent to play in the NBA, and is one of the few Asian Americans to have played in the league. Lin has experienced racism on the basketball court as he has been called “coronavirus” during games. Recently, Lin has been using his voice on social media to bring awareness to the rise of anti-Asian hate crimes. “We are tired of being told that we don't experience racism, we are tired of being told to keep our heads down and not make trouble,” said Lin. Jeremy Lin has been a key leader in the #StopAsianHate movement.
